The company was incorporated in 1887 by Duluth businessmen interested in improving the city's freight transportation facilities. It built and operated about 2 miles of largely elevated trackage from the Northern Pacific bridge to the Duluth Union Depot. Effective control was transferred in 1890 to the Eastern Railway Company of Minnesota, which had financed the company's construction. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
